January Wine Club: A Fresh Start with Naturally Driven Wines

One of the most exciting shifts happening in wine right now is a move away from overworked, over-polished bottles and toward wines that feel more honest—driven by place, people, and thoughtful farming. This month’s Wine Club is a perfect snapshot of that trend, featuring both whites and reds that celebrate under-the-radar vineyards, minimal intervention, and wines that are meant to be enjoyed, not overthought.

At the heart of this collection is Field Recordings, the deeply personal project of winemaker Andrew Jones. Andrew has an incredible eye for “diamonds in the rough”—vineyards that may not be famous, but quietly produce exceptional fruit. By day, he works as a vine nursery fieldman, planning and planting vineyards across California. Along the way, farmers often offer him small lots of their best fruit, and Andrew turns those opportunities into soulful, small-production wines with real personality.

Field Recordings is his catalog of the people, places, and vineyards he believes in most. The wines are expressive, site-driven, and completely unpretentious—made to tell a story and taste great doing it.

The Whites

These whites lean fresh, textured, and full of character—perfect examples of how natural-leaning winemaking can still be clean, vibrant, and incredibly food-friendly.

Bright White (Santa Barbara County) A lively, sunshine-filled blend that does exactly what the name promises. Bright citrus, subtle florals, and a crisp finish make this an easy go-to for aperitif sipping or lighter fare. It’s California white wine without the heaviness.

Memory Palace Sauvignon Blanc (Santa Barbara County) This is Sauvignon Blanc with depth and intrigue—aromatic but restrained, with layers of citrus, herbs, and mineral tension. It’s a great reminder that Sauvignon Blanc can be expressive and thoughtful without shouting.

Field Recordings Chenin Blanc Chenin Blanc is having a well-deserved moment, and this bottle shows why. Energetic acidity, stone fruit, and a subtle waxy texture make this both refreshing and complex. It’s versatile, food-friendly, and a total insider pick.

The Reds

These reds are all about balance, drinkability, and letting vineyard character shine—no heavy-handed winemaking, just honest, soulful bottles.

Wonderwall Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County) Light on its feet but full of charm, this Pinot delivers red fruit, gentle spice, and silky texture. It’s elegant without being precious—just as good on its own as it is with dinner.

Fiction (We Made You a Mixtape!) A playful blend that lives up to its name. Juicy, layered, and a little unexpected, Fiction is Andrew’s reminder that wine can be creative, flexible, and fun. Think of it as your Tuesday-night bottle that still feels special.

Barter & Trade Cabernet Sauvignon — Columbia Valley

This bottle is a love letter to classic structure with a modern, thoughtful touch. Andrew Jones approaches Barter & Trade like a well-edited book—so naturally, the back label reads like a Table of Contents. Inside: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced entirely from Columbia Valley, a region known for balancing ripeness with freshness. The wine spends time in 50% new French oak and 50% seasoned French oak, lending polish and depth without overpowering the fruit.

The result is a Cabernet that feels intentional rather than showy—layered, balanced, and deeply drinkable. It’s the kind of bottle that works just as well alongside a hearty dinner as it does poured casually at the table with friends. Serious wine, relaxed energy.

How to Enjoy

These are wines with enough depth to save for a special occasion—but in true Field Recordings fashion, they’re just as happy being opened on a random weeknight. Cook something simple, pour generously, and enjoy wines that reflect real people and real vineyards.

Cheers to discovering something new and natural in 2026. 🍷
