September Wine Club: Discovering Thelema & Sutherland

This month’s wine club pick is extra special — not just for what’s in the glass, but for the story behind it.
Back in March 2024, I was invited on the trip of a lifetime to South Africa to explore the wines and culture in and around Cape Town. Over the course of a week, I visited seven incredible wineries — each with its own story, its own family, and its own connection to the land.
One winery in particular left an unforgettable mark: Thelema Mountain Vineyards. Nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Simonsberg Mountains, Thelema feels almost otherworldly. I hiked among the vines, felt the rocky terroir, and experienced firsthand how the land shapes the wines. I met the Webb family, shared stories (and wine!) with them, and even played with the vineyard dogs. It was a true reminder that wine is not just a product — it’s a living expression of people, place, and passion.
Even better? Thelema also owns Sutherland Vineyards, located in the cooler climate of Elgin. Between these two estates, the Webb family produces a remarkable range of wines that highlight the diversity of South Africa’s terroir.
This month, our Ando’s Market Wine Club is thrilled to feature a curated selection from both Thelema and Sutherland:
🍇 Wine Club Lineup
Whites
Thelema Mountain White 2024
Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Thelema Chardonnay 2023

Rosé (included in our "Mix of All Wines" subscription)
Sutherland Grenache Rosé 2024

Reds
Thelema Mountain Red 2021
Thelema Shiraz 2021
Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

And the story doesn’t end there. On Tuesday, September 24th, we’ll be welcoming Thomas Webb, owner of Thelema, right here at Ando’s Market. Together, we’ll host an unforgettable wine dinner featuring Thelema wines, paired with a thoughtful multi-course menu. Tickets are $75 per person — and seating is limited. Email andosmarket@gmail.com for reservations.
Raise a glass with us this September — here’s to bringing the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Elgin a little closer to home.
🍷 Cheers,
Katie
